Born in Brussels as Audrey Kathleen Ruston, Englishman Joseph Anthony Ruston and his second wife, Baroness Ella van Heemstra a, an aristocratic Dutch. Years later, the father of Hepburn added the surname of his maternal grandmother Kathleen Hepburn, to the family, thus turning them into Hepburn-Ruston.He had two brothers, Arnoud Robert Alexander and Ian Edgar Bruce, that the mother had from his first marriage to a Dutch nobleman, Hendrik Gustaaf Adolf Quarles van Ufford. Among his ancestors, the family of Hepburn had Edward III of England and James Hepburn, fourth Earl of Bothwell, from which it may be down also Katharine Hepburn.
His father’s job at an insurance company British forced the family to move frequently between Belgium , the United Kingdom and the Netherlands . In 1935 Hepburn’s parents divorced and her father, a sympathizer of the Nazis, abandoned the family.Later, the actress declared that that was the most traumatic moment of his life. Years later, through the Red Cross , managed to find the father who had meanwhile moved to Dublin . He stayed in touch with him helping him financially also, until his death. In 1939 the mother moved with her children in the Dutch city of Arnhem , thinking to have found a place safe from Nazi attacks. In that city Hepburn attended the Conservatory from 1939 to 1945 , where he studied dance.
In 1940 the Germans invaded Arnhem. During the war, Hepburn changed his name to Edda van Heemstra , because of the sound “English” considered dangerous, his real name.
